How to post on desktop
- Open facebook.com in any browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari — all work).
- In the left sidebar, click Groups, then click into the group you want to post in. Or paste the group URL directly.
- At the top of the group feed, you’ll see a box that says “Write something…”. Click it.
- Type your post. To paste, use Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac).
- To attach an image or video, click the small photo/video icon in the composer.
- To add a colored background or feeling/activity tag, use the icons in the composer toolbar.
- When you’re ready, click the Post button.
If the group is moderated, your post will say “Pending approval” and won’t appear in the feed until an admin approves it. If the group is open, your post appears immediately.
Editing or deleting a post
After posting, click the three-dot menu in the top-right of your post → Edit post or Delete. Edited posts show an “Edited” tag.
How to post on mobile
The Facebook mobile app (iOS and Android) follows the same flow:- Open the Facebook app.
- Tap the menu (three lines on iOS, top-right; or hamburger on Android).
- Tap Groups → Your groups → pick a group.
- At the top of the group feed, tap the box that says “Write something…” (or just “What’s on your mind?” if you’re a member).
- Type your post, then tap the camera icon to attach photos or videos from your phone.
- Tap Post in the top-right corner.
The mobile app is what most casual posters use — it feels less robotic and tends to attract slightly more engagement, especially in groups where members also post primarily from their phones.
How to post as a Page or Profile
By default, you post as your personal profile. To post as a Page you manage:Desktop
- Open the group composer.
- Click the small avatar in the top-right corner of the composer.
- A dropdown appears showing your profile + every Page you manage.
- Pick the Page.
- The composer now shows the Page’s name + avatar — confirm the post will appear from the Page.
- Compose and click Post.
Mobile
- Tap the composer.
- Above your post, tap the identity pill that shows your name.
- Pick a Page from the list.
- Compose and tap Post.
When you can’t post as a Page
- The group disabled Page posts. Some admins block Page posts to keep the feed feeling personal. If your Page doesn’t show in the dropdown, this is likely the cause.
- You’re not the Page admin. You need at least Editor permissions on the Page.
- You’re not a member of the group as your personal profile. Pages can’t be standalone members of groups — the Page can only post inside groups your personal profile has joined.
“Pending approval” — what it means
If your post immediately says “Pending approval” (or just disappears from your view but is missing from the group feed), the group has post approval turned on. This is normal for moderated groups. What happens next:
- Your post enters the admin’s moderation queue.
- An admin reviews and either approves (it appears in the feed) or rejects (it disappears entirely).
- You’ll get a Facebook notification when the decision is made — usually within minutes for active groups, but it can take days for less-active groups.
You haven’t done anything wrong. Almost all serious groups use post approval to filter spam.
If you need a post approved quickly, posting during the group’s peak hours (when admins are likely online) generally helps.
Group rules and automated moderation
Many groups use Facebook’s built-in moderation tools to auto-block posts that:- Contain certain banned keywords (e.g. “for sale” in a discussion group).
- Include external links to specific domains.
- Are posted by accounts under a certain age or with too few mutual members.
- Repeat content the admin has previously rejected.
If your post seems to publish but never shows up in the feed, automated moderation likely removed it. To diagnose:
- Check the group’s About tab → Rules.
- Re-read your post against each rule.
- Try posting the same content without links, then without certain words, to identify the trigger.
Adding images, videos, and links
Images. Click the photo icon in the composer. You can attach up to 10 images per post. Square or 4:3 ratio displays best.Videos. Same icon, then pick a video file. Max length depends on the group, but Facebook generally allows up to ~240 minutes. Native video uploads get ~10× more reach than YouTube embeds.
Links. Just paste the URL. Facebook auto-generates a link preview card with the page’s title, description, and thumbnail. Once the preview loads, you can delete the URL from your post text — the preview card stays.
Tip: for promotional posts, putting your link in the first comment instead of the post body often gets better reach. Facebook’s algorithm slightly suppresses posts with external links.
What if you need to post to many groups?
If you’re posting in 5–10 groups regularly, manual posting is fine. Above that, you’ll start losing a serious chunk of your week — about 90 seconds per group adds up to 90 minutes for 50 groups, every single day. That’s the point at which most marketers switch to a multi-group poster. We built MultiGroupPoster for exactly this scenario: a Chrome extension that handles the repetitive work while keeping your account safe with realistic typing, randomized delays, and Spintax content variation.

FAQ
How do I post on a Facebook group I just joined?
You can post immediately if the group has open posting. Some groups require new members to be a member for X days before they can post — check the group’s rules.
Can I post anonymously in a Facebook group?
Some groups offer anonymous posting (the admin enables it). When the option is available, you’ll see an Anonymous Post toggle in the composer. Otherwise, all posts show your name.
Why doesn’t my post show up after I clicked Post?
Three reasons in order of likelihood: (1) admin approval is on and your post is in moderation, (2) automated moderation removed it for a rules violation, (3) you posted to a different group than you thought.
How do I find groups to post in?
Use Facebook’s group search bar with relevant keywords. Filter by location, activity level, and member count. Also: ask in adjacent groups — admins often cross-promote. For a more strategic approach, see our guide to finding and managing Facebook groups.
Can I edit my post after submitting?
Yes. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right of your post → Edit post. Edits show an “Edited” tag visible to other members.
How do I post in a Facebook group as my business page?
See the “How to Post as a Page or Profile” section above. Note that some groups disable Page posts entirely.
